5:10 pm
i have a bone to pick with you. the performers have dressing rooms, right? i'm performing. where is my dressing room? that one is... # three lions on the shirt... behind us we can see the three lions and that is because you are singing your song from 1996. what did it mean to you when the country got behind it? it was such a great song. i love the world cup, there was a heatwave and it went from there. it was great for me,| it went from there. it was great for me, i enjoyed the world cup and england played well, which was fantastic. it all came together. will football ever come home?
5:11 pm
if it comes home, it is the end of my song. all the seats have names on, and it isn't just sports stars. all the seats have names on, and it isn'tjust sports stars. we have the cast of love island. i hate it! we have seen a lot of names, but not our own. i want to find our seats. let's look for are names. we still need to find those seats, by the way. hello, and welcome to all of those people joining by the way. hello, and welcome to all of those peoplejoining us on the news channel. we are welcoming you with a special individual, the heavyweight champion in many of our hearts, tyson fury. how are you, sir? fantastic, thank you. very well. let's talk about the second knock—down in the 12th round against wilder. somehow like the undertaken
5:12 pm
in wwe, you rose up. how did you do it? i had to rise for the people suffering, to show that it is possible. many men would have stayed down but i couldn't stay there. i had to get up. i think for so many athletes, for you to come from a place and build yourself back up for a comeback like this, it is so inspiring for anyone competing, to find themselves in a tough position and makea find themselves in a tough position and make a comeback. any advice for people down in the dark place? lama bit of people down in the dark place? iamabitofa people down in the dark place? i am a bit of a professional at a dark place, unfortunately. when you are in that dark place, it is not a bad place to be because you can only go up. we all struggle in our lives and it's how we come back from it. getting back up and keep moving forward. plenty of people out there are in those dark places you do need help, and!
5:13 pm
are in those dark places you do need help, and i would say to anyone struggling at the moment that help is out there. all you have to do is ask and 20 people can seek medical advice immediately. it won't go away. i've suffered all my life with mental health problems but the last three years before this one i was in a very, very dark place and two with those years it was kept bottled up and it didn't help. i exploded. as soon as i got professional help, i started to make a recovery. if i can come back from where i was, anyone can come back from anything. thank you for those words. how was the feeling of redemption, when so many people said, when you are £a00, it's not possible. then you step in with a dangerous fighter like wilder. you take is dangerous shot and give bigger. how much joy did it give you? it wasn'tjust the
5:14 pm
give you? it wasn't just the fact it gave me ivy, i it wasn't just the fact it gave me joy, i felt like a winner losing the weight and being able to compete again. it's no secret, the weight i was. i lost ten stone. everyone said it was impossible but i showed that with determination, anything can be done. never write anybody off, never judge a book by its cover. and what you are capable of is a potential sports personality greatest moment of the year. how do you feel about that? i think it was an epic moment. ijust did my best show. i came back from a 12 round knockout. it was an epic moment in my life and i didn'tjust do it to get up and survive the fight, i do it to get up and survive the fight, idid do it to get up and survive the fight, i did it to prove that nothing can keep a man down if he wants to get up. can we have a few words for your fantastic wife, paris. how supportive has she been? in fact, do you want to come over? we are
5:15 pm
speaking to the gypsy king, tyson fury. you know the challenges he has overcome. how proud are you of this man? extremely proud. i knew it was a man waiting to come but i am so proud. i can't waiting to come but i am so proud. ican't imagine waiting to come but i am so proud. i can't imagine what it's like to see a loved one get knocked down like that. how was it for you? terrible. the worst moment in my life. it was horrific. it was for ten seconds but it seemed like a lot longer, scary times. anything this man can't do? aj next? if i had my way, he would retire and come home. he will have to conquer them all. definitely. tyson fury, hopefully you will win the greatest sporting moment and we will see you again against wilder. maybe see you again in a year or two's time. you can only give it your best shot. there is no shame in winning or losing. achieving to your ability is the most important thing, and i feel like i have done that. thank you very much. have an amazing
5:16 pm
evening. how inspiring is that man, by the way? honestly, as someone who is still involved in professional sport, to see that you can come back from the bottom... 0k, it wasn't a victory, but to redeem yourself and bring yourself back to this level of performance is something else. i think we've got some more guests. cricketing legends. gentleman, come on over. welcome. you have been summoned, andi on over. welcome. you have been summoned, and i do apologise. how are you feeling to be here?m is great to be here. i watched it as a kid growing up. a prestigious event in the sporting calendar so i'm really excited to be here. you are one of the potential favourites to be put into the shortlist. how do you feel your chances are? i would say slim. the amount of tale nt i would say slim. the amount of talent here tonight and these amazing sportsmen and sportswomen who have had a great year. i'm just
5:17 pm
happy to be here and enjoy a good night. i will happily go. let's talk about the competition. it is lovely when you see athletes from all types of backgrounds. how do you feel seeing people from all fields of sport? it is amazing. in cricket you are used to hanging out with the same kind of people and it's a great opportunity to bump into lots of different people and the tyson fury and that kind. seeing a man who is as dangerous as he is, it is an out of body experience. i can see you smiling. you want a christmas stocking challenge. are you up for it on the red carpet? of course. it could be a challenge, it could be a joke that it could be a little question. yes? jimmy said yes. lucky dip. is it
5:18 pm
lucky dip. isita lucky dip. is it a joke? is it a challenge? what is it? take a red—carpet selfie. shall we do it now? i don't have a phone on me because i'm short of pockets. the telephone is out. this could go on social media. i will devalue it. yes, gentleman. thank you very much. have a fantastic evening. as well as cricketers and boxers, we have people competing in the world of tv entertainment. in the form of freya. you are going to be performing later. iand. later. land. i later. i and. i keep pinching myself. later. land. i keep pinching myself. we are used to seeing performances in a sports contest but what about singing? what is it like for you when you are about to perform? it is quite nerve—racking but it is such an honour to be asked and at such an honour to be asked and at such an honour to be asked and at such an emotional part of the show,
5:19 pm
thinking of people's families and what they have been through. iam singing what they have been through. i am singing as well in the pre—show. we were backstage yesterday and i saw your dressing room. some advice? any tips? guy noves. what is your top tip for performing? it isa performing? it is a bit cheesy but i saw a ted talk where somebody said you need to doa talk where somebody said you need to do a wonder woman pose and if you hold it for a while, it lowers your cortisol. people think i'm crazy. ido cortisol. people think i'm crazy. i do the long jump and i stand on the runway for this, but i never thought of doing it for this. the same principle. can we see your wonder woman pose and ready to go? it is normally something i do in private. ijust it is normally something i do in private. i just put it is normally something i do in private. ijust put my hands on my hips. the belt helps me feel like a superhero. something that probably won't help you is our christmas stocking. we
5:20 pm
are challenging people on the red carpet to do a joke or a challenge. everyone else was a little bit nervous. would you rather have a reindeer nose or elf feet? do you think elf feet are little feet? i'm quite also if i had little feet? i'm quite also if i had little feet i would fall over. reindeer nose. you would look cold all the time, but you deal with it. i would do it, because options! good luck for tonight. now, as well as performing in the vocal since we also have performances in the dance is. i know at some point we will be seeing the strictly contenders. aj and lauren steadman are due to arrive. we have them right here. how are we? very good, thank you. great outfits. thank you. i'm doing it for my mother. scottish. first of
5:21 pm
all, you made it to the semifinals of strictly. the journey itself was fantastic. i can't describe how magical it was, and for us to get to the semifinals... we we re semifinals... we were hoping to get to blackpool but to get to the semifinals, the support was amazing. lauren defied the odds and worked so hard. i was rooting for you but aj, i'm from stoke. you've been my parent. how has it been to work together? —— you've been my pair. lauren has been stubborn, saying that she will achieve it, even if it isn't physically possible. it has always been about ability. yes, yes, yes. i could kill you sometimes but it has been fantastic. what about the final? when people we re what about the final? when people were lined up, you have no idea. it was such a high standard of dancing this year. it was jaw—dropping, so amazing. such a
5:22 pm
good atmosphere and everyone was so excited. i am over the moon that stacey was the winner. it was so positive because everyone wanted everyone to do well. so positive that night. you are here by right as well because of the paralympics. we have an award for the sports tonight, greatest sporting moment of the year. do you have one? for myself or overall? anything. i am going to say vicky holland, winning it for the women. triathlete. mine was lauren steadman winning goal before starting strictly the following morning. date phenomenal moment. how did you feel when the firstjoe hadn't begun? i told him not to come back without gold because second is first loser. he wouldn't pick me up if i got
5:23 pm
silver! can we talk about triathlon because lots of people don't know how much ha rd lots of people don't know how much hard work goes into it. what does it take? you have to be disciplined and you can't be good across one, you have to be good across all three. it is good time management and nutrition. it isa good time management and nutrition. it is a lifestyle choice. but is enjoyable. with triathlon the beauty is that any age, any ability can do it. you can run anywhere in the world, notjust on it. you can run anywhere in the world, not just on a treadmill. do you think being an athlete at an international level has helps you with mac you on your —— has helped you on your strictlyjourney? i think, as a] said, i am stubborn. you have to keep an attacking. i prefer determined as a world with mac word, not stubborn. i will you have that one. can we see a little cheeky dance?
5:24 pm
she has got a large skirt and at the moment. i will show you a simple one. the feet don't even have to move. straightaway, you went with it. she is good. she likes to lead. the final question, the world cup. how incredible was the moment when england won on penalties against colombia? irememberthat one. colombia? i remember that one. i was celebrating hard. popcorn everywhere. my housemate is colombian. a quiet celebration. we will speak to gareth southgate, the man behind that performance, in a moment. have a fantastic night. have a fantastic night. have a fantastic night. have a great night. she has still got it, by the way. she has really got it. good at triathlon, good at dancing. congratulations to stacey dooley. a
5:25 pm
genuine non—dancer doing so well. we cannot have this red—carpet event without speaking to gareth southgate. he is on the telephone so we will leave him for a moment. if i was speaking to my mum she would be livid if i cut the phone off to do an interview. let's do it. you cut the phone call short. no problem. this year, greatest sporting moment of 2018. you were instrumental in one of those that has been nominated, the penalty shoot out against colombia. what did it mean to you to see that redemption take place in front of the nation since 1996? it was such an important moment for us as it was such an important moment for usasa it was such an important moment for us as a team it was such an important moment for us as a team because we it was such an important moment for us as a team because we knew to progress we needed to win a knockout game, so huge pressure progress we needed to win a knockout game, so huge pressure on progress we needed to win a knockout game, so huge pressure on all of the players. of course, there is a bit of personal history with that situation sol of personal history with that situation so i felt quite calm going into it because we knew we had prepared but the emotion at the end
5:26 pm
of it tells you what it meant. i heard a speech by stuart pearce who told us about his penalty, 2009, england under 21 is, as a result of him implementing penalty shoot out practice in training. do you think what happened to you in 1996 allowed you to see outside the box and see us you to see outside the box and see us transition in an incredible way this year as a result? it helps. it shapes your thinking. it helps. it shapes your thinking. it isn't luck, it's about executing a skill under pressure. you have to prepare for that. we felt as prepared as you could be but it is down to the players, and they showed great resolve and resilience to step up. harry kane is one of the... i was going to mention that we don't know the contenders for the main award. speaking about your players, have you got any body and mind you you think deserves the award this year?
5:27 pm
i know harry kane has the golden boot, so he led the team brilliantly. we had some great individual performances from unknown players to the wider public before the tournament. we had a really inexperienced team so we are very proud of what they have achieved. we also know there have been some incredible sporting performances, like thomas and ashley smith —— dealer ashley smith. —— like thomas and ashley smith —— dealerashley smith. —— dine like thomas and ashley smith —— dealer ashley smith. —— dine ashley you can see that no expense was spared on this. can you open this? yes. let's see this now. it could be a faberge egg. it could be something priceless. 0r a faberge egg. it could be something priceless. or it could be... 0k! very good. here we go. a little bit loud for tonight maybe, but i
5:28 pm
appreciate it. i'm not as good at snooker as john appreciate it. i'm not as good at snooker asjohn but if i wore this maybe it would transform my game. thank you for your game. he isa he is a good sport. he is a good sport. he is, is in the? he mentioned one particular contender for the sports personality of the year, geraint thomas. by magic of television, he is here. i have a friend with the same name as you. can you tell us how to pronounce it? nobody gets it right. if you are struggling, go with g. can we talk about the tour de france? what an accomplishment that was. how hard was it? we don't feel
5:29 pm
the lactic acid, we don't see what goes into it. it was hard. i don't know, it is one of them... it's hard when you are in the back and it is harder if you are at the front waiting for the win. it is incredible, how many years we have done it and for it to come together. this year has been immense. have you a favourite sporting moment of your own from 2018? you've stumped me here. one of mine was in the 12th day when you overtook chris froome, was that the 12th day? stage 11, i won my first stage. the iconic climb in cycling, and to win it with the yellowjersey the iconic climb in cycling, and to win it with the yellow jersey was amazing. we potentially spoke about tyson fury, tiger woods, lizzy yarnold... ididn't fury, tiger woods, lizzy yarnold... i didn't see much of the winter
5:30 pm
olympics but i love rugby and football. i follow arsenal. so do football. ifollow arsenal. so do i, mate. somebody has got to. it is looking better, apart from today. when you win something as monumental as this, some people talk about it's not how i felt, it's not how i expected to feel afterwards. is it a come down? did you say on the high of achieving something you wanted to? it was a massive hive. i didn't think about it. it was all about what i had to do in the race, then suddenly, i win, what i had to do in the race, then suddenly, iwin, and i started crying on international tv, which is a bit embarrassing. no shame in that! you might cry again when we show you what we've got for you. let's talk about the nec in birmingham where something very bad happened. what was? my tour de france trophy was borrowed by a bike manufacturer for show, and somebody
5:31 pm
stole it. i got a replacement, which was not quite the real thing, disappointing. we have something real for you disappointing. we have something realfor you tonight. disappointing. we have something real for you tonight. a christmas gift. it's heavy. lower your expectations. gets wrapped well. producer holly wrapped it with every sinew of her body. she's an arsenal fan as well, by the way. well, thank you very much. can you show the camera, because you very much. can you show the camera , because we you very much. can you show the camera, because we even for engraving. let's get a nice close—up on that one. —— we even paid for engraving. all the very best of luck tonight. thank you. geraint is fast becoming a legend of his book, but

5:33 pm
am i? the lifetime achievement, which means your old. i won't get one. could we talk about sport? this isa one. could we talk about sport? this is a real celebration of sport, and for someone to be involved in it for so for someone to be involved in it for so long, what advice would you have? jasmin isa so long, what advice would you have? jasmin is a long jumper who represented great britain. what do you want to achieve? olympic gold. i think it comes down to wanting it, which you do, and secondly, you have to pay the price. i am big on having your head, your heart and your guts in it and integrated. when they are, thatis in it and integrated. when they are, that is when you're in the zone. and when you are not, you are not. it has to be in the now, the present. you have to keep adapting, and then pressure is a privilege. you have to
5:34 pm
thrive on it. do it for whatever works for you. i love to share it with the people. when i won —— walk on centre court at wimbledon, i want people to go home and say, i love that. give them something to watch. there is something magical about sharing it. it is notjust about us, it is about everybody watching, being so involved. what makes you great? my engagement with the crown. i love it. —— with the crowd. and my p0p i love it. —— with the crowd. and my pop off the ground. i think, up and forward , pop off the ground. i think, up and forward, over and over in my head. it is incredible seeing an icon of her sport teaching somebody who is fast becoming, hopefully, a future icon of hours. why not? if the
5:35 pm
inspirational words of billie jean king want so it might make you want to get involved, check this. —— make you want to get involved. without her, it wouldn't be what it is today. she is so giving. she is a hero, i don't know how she does it. his passion for basketball is so infectious, and his enthusiasm to teach us his passion is incredible. without him, i wouldn't be here. he's my hero. it feels undeserved but so lovely. thank you very much. thank you. he does it for the love
5:36 pm
of the game. i would hope that people in any community will see that we should be active part of our community. if there is something you can bea community. if there is something you can be a part of, why wouldn't you? i'm delighted to say we are delighted by all 15 regional winners for the bbc get inspired unsung hero. asa, i can tell you're excited to be here. why do you think volunteering is so important the board? it doesn't need all the funding and kit to keep sessions going. volunteering is for everyone, no matter what age you are. if you have a person —— if you have a passion, volunteering is the right path. is volunteering truly
5:37 pm
inspiring? it is. i have a question for you. who inspired you? asa swimmer, as a swimmer, i used to compete against hannah miley, who swims in the gb squad, and she continues to inspire me. she is as down to earth today as she was when she was 13. she is always smiling and happy no matter the result. her ability to pick herself up and keep going is inspiring. can wejust pick herself up and keep going is inspiring. can we just have a massive round of applause from all 15 of our regional winners for get inspired unsung hero? applause what might they call this work, but iam what might they call this work, but i am getting to have a chat with one of my best mates. dina asher—smith. it has been an incredible year for
5:38 pm
you. you have had gold medal after gold medal — can you sum it up?m is amazing because i get to see you with your new account. my highlight is seeing jasmin after her big chop. it is gorgeous. my highlight was the european championships, i have to say, because i went in there with the aim of doing well, and coming away with some fast times and hopefully winning, but to come away as world leader and three gold medals was phenomenal. it had to be that. we have grown up together in the sport, really. we have. what has been a big breakthrough this year? what has made the difference in that transition from juniors to gold medals? probably self-confidence, because when you are little, you are alwaysjunior, because when you are little, you are always junior, and you because when you are little, you are alwaysjunior, and you think, i am talented and lucky to be able to do this, and you don't take in the moment and believe in yourself, you
5:39 pm
just see how it goes and then you're happy with the result. this year, i tell myself, no, i'm tired of coming fourth and fifth, i want to be ranked, win this, and i really buckled down. it is the first time i have come to training and to the line with that mentality, and it is a big change, sol line with that mentality, and it is a big change, so i had to take it forward. it is good advice. i am trying to do that. you mentioned winning a lot, but what about winning a lot, but what about winning tonight? you know, i actually haven't thought about it, because in my head, i don't really feel like i would win. i know i'm saying this on bbc and i probably shouldn't... saying this on bbc and i probably shouldn't. .. it'sjust saying this on bbc and i probably shouldn't. .. it's just me! saying this on bbc and i probably shouldn't. .. it'sjust me! there are so shouldn't. .. it'sjust me! there are so many other fantastic sporting achievements. i honestly haven't thought about it because i am enjoying being here with my friends, enjoying being here with my friends, enjoying the chance to glamour. i
5:40 pm
think that's —— to glam up. i would like... something happened, for eve ryo ne like... something happened, for everyone who doesn't know, and tina had a pretty serious emergency involving, what was it? it was a hair scrunchy. morgan outed the text on twitter. we have a group chat, throw things in, and the biggest thing on your mind, well, not the biggest thing, but when you are nervous. . . biggest thing, but when you are nervous... i thought, biggest thing, but when you are nervous... ithought, i don't biggest thing, but when you are nervous... i thought, i don't know what kind of scrunchy to wear. they told me to where the light blue, which i did. you are saying that is responsible for the gold—medal? which i did. you are saying that is responsible for the gold-medal? my mum and dad wouldn't agree with that

5:42 pm
get it. impartiality! as always at the bbc. that is the slowest i've ever seen the bbc. that is the slowest i've ever seen dina asher—smith move. billy monger, you have an inspirational story. can you tell us what happened to you relatively recently that you had to overcome? what happened to you relatively recently that you had to overcome ?|j had a race car accident about 18 months ago and had both of my legs amputated, one above the knee, one below. i had spent most of my time trying to get bike racing and getting back to winning ways. you say trying to get back to racing, but let's be frank, what was your last result? i've finished third in the last race of the season. it has beena the last race of the season. it has been a good year and i couldn't ask for it to go any better than it has. it isa for it to go any better than it has. it is a fantastic story. i know you massively look up the lewis
5:43 pm
hamilton, who is in the mix for sports personality of the year. what does he mean to you? when i started go—karting, which is where everyone starts, he was winning world titles, and he was like my british superhero, always at the front, winning championships and races, and i looked up to him. to see what he has achieved, and to have the opportunity to meet him and spend some time, it's everything that is the young racing driver you want to look up to. the technology prosthesis is incredible. my grandad lost his leg in the second world war, and a prosthesis he had now i was completely different. what do you have to do to change your driving is compared to someone with two matching legs? i have a different set that are designed for racing to help me and make it easier. it has been difficult. i've had to relearn everything. i do a

of the presenting team this year — how excited we? no one will know who the nominees are until the show starts. there is bound to be a big name who isn't in the six who is there. what if they decide to get up and walk out? everyone turned round and walk out? everyone turned round and gives that disappointed look. and walk out? everyone turned round and gives that disappointed lookm will be like the oscars, when people pretend. great shortlist... we know the nominees for the new award, greatest sporting moment. do any of you have a favourite out of the nominees? i think you probably do. i think the netballers who won. how will you guys find out and then tell

be said, you are one of the favourites. how proud are you of this man? so proud. it was a big summer this man? so proud. it was a big summerfor this man? so proud. it was a big summer for us. can this man? so proud. it was a big summer for us. can we this man? so proud. it was a big summer for us. can we talk about the word composure? in terms of what you do, is the way you compose yourself, even the penalty against colombia. for about three minutes, it seemed, you stay calm. what was going through your head? it was crazy, really. a lot of players arguing, andl really. a lot of players arguing, and i was just really. a lot of players arguing, and i wasjust trying to get in the zone. it was a big moment, but the country. my team— mates zone. it was a big moment, but the country. my team—mates were trying to push other players away, get them away from me. i have a routine, tried to stick to, put the ball down and focused on trying to put it in the back of the net. we have sports stars tonight from all kinds of sports. i know you are nonstop busy. but do you watch any other sports and do you have any favourite
5:48 pm
moments from any other sports fisher? golf, especially. -- any other sports this year. i've had a busy year personally, but i watch other sports, other people. i love to see people perform well. that is probably the highlight of the sporting year for me. what might we see you on the pitch, but what can you tell us about this man off the pitch that we don't know? he's very dedicated, professional. i hardly see him! he's amazing. you've done well there, mate. a very kind and flattering answer. my girlfriend wouldn't have said that! it has been a big year for us because we had our second child, a little girl. hopefully 2019 brings more success. we're trying to keep things light on

the red carpet, and we have a christmas stocking filled with jokes and challenges — are you willing? 0k. and challenges — are you willing? ok. let's see what you get. it could bea ok. let's see what you get. it could be a joke or a challenge. my favourite christmas movie... i would probably say the grinch. elf as well. did you see any of the winter olympics? not much of it. our schedule has been pretty busy, so pretty full on. i didn't catch any of it, to be honest. we will chat to someone of it, to be honest. we will chat to someone who performed incredibly well, lizzy yarnold. thank you for your time. see you later. i said lizzy yarnold for reason, because
5:50 pm
here she is. what a year it has been. olympic gold, operation, baby. two operations, actually. two golds and two operations! it has been a tough year. pushing my body to the limit, mentally and physically, i needed to take the summer and put myself back together. it was a lot of teamwork, i had to admit, but we are looking ahead, a new challenge forjames are looking ahead, a new challenge for james and i are looking ahead, a new challenge forjames and i together. let's talk about the moment you won gold. i was lucky enough to be there, and do not know what went through your head before that final run. you were not ina before that final run. you were not in a brilliant position to get gold, eight and you didn'tjust put down a good run but a track record. what was going through your head? the fourth run was the only one that i could actually do properly and show people what i was made up. i had this chest infection, sinusitis, and
5:51 pm
they thought i had pneumonia, which is why i had to leave early, but we got through the race, i survived, so with one more run to go and two hundredths of a second, i thought, i have to give it everything i have got and hope it is enough. have to give it everything i have got and hope it is enoughm have to give it everything i have got and hope it is enough. it was an incredible sporting moment. got and hope it is enough. it was an incredible sporting momentm got and hope it is enough. it was an incredible sporting moment. it was. i have a question, or more of a personal request. having announced your retirement this year, i'm still competing, is there anything you wished you had realised sooner when you were still competing? really believe in yourself and your journey. don't compare yourself to other people because you will take time and learn things in your own way. really believe in yourself. i had to learn to enjoy sliding, even though i was competing for my country, which i took seriously. you need to know that you can do great things. you never know what is around the corner for any of us.
5:52 pm
enjoy it and have fun. we thought we would cheer you up with a little christmas gift, especially for you. oh, my word. it is very much a retirement gift. i hope it's chocolate! 0, wow. i wonder if it says anything in front. oh, thank you! this is fantastic. can i put it on now? thank you. it is our pleasure. you mentioned your husband james. i was stood next to him after your second run, so james. i was stood next to him after your second run, so things weren't going well and you were talking about potentially dropping out, and his words were, she'll be fine. and i was mesmerised at how calm he was. ididn't i was mesmerised at how calm he was. i didn't ask your parents because i thought, my mum would be going crazy, but it was as though he had that belief. that's interesting
5:53 pm
because i didn't know that he had that kind of calm, collected power in his mind, because i was faltering and wanting to pull out, and it's amazing that the people that you surround yourself with give you the strength and belief when you don't believe in yourself and stop so i'm really grateful that i had that support full stop sport is a lifetime thing, not evenjust in the good moments but the bad ones, too. he's all right, i'll keep him. do that. lizzie, congratulations. the very best of luck for tonight. lizzie had one of the many moments that have been put fantastic moments of 2018, and here is another one virtue of england in the world cup. —— that have been fantastic. the game of their lives. the goal
5:54 pm
was a great start, but your conscious when you score really early, how is this going to affect the dynamic of the game? as the game wore on, we were not quite as brave, because we had something to hold onto. petr cech came in to score. we we re we were better in the first half. stones, brilliant header off the line. then they scored from a random flick. journey's end for england, but we might have seen enough here in russia to suggest that this is really just in russia to suggest that this is reallyjust the start. in russia to suggest that this is
5:55 pm
really just the start. what in russia to suggest that this is reallyjust the start. what a special summer it really was for english football. i feel that gareth southgate and harry kane, having spoken to them, they have taken the sport of football to such a positive place in our hearts. i'm not someone who keeps up completely with football, but it's impossible not to be captured by that team. gareth southgate has cultivated that himself in a team that everyone wa nts to himself in a team that everyone wants to get behind. rio, and london, which was before your time, but the public getting behind you, and the country? i can't tell you what it means having messages of support pouring in. having people in the stadium shouting and holding gb flags, but when people who can't make it our cheering for you and sending messages, that gives you motivation. the thing, i'm going to
5:56 pm
do this is not only for people who support me. we will take a pause because there is someone else we wa nt to because there is someone else we want to speak to. paloma faith, how are you? i'm well. what is this outfit? it is trousers. ithink i'm the perfect person for it because i know nothing about sport, so i will be able... people will be relieved that i don't know who they are. i think sometimes these things can be intense and everyone wants pictures with you, and i went the able to tell the difference between who is a sports personality and who is the manager or the waiter or anything. we have a new award this year, called greatest sporting moment. with that in mind, what has been the greatest moment of paloma faith's
5:57 pm
year? this year? yes. it would be... my child's second birthday. what is his or her name? i'm not saying. we will say hello anyway. on the red carpet, we are challenging people with our christmas stocking challenge. would you mind reaching in an pulling out what could be a joke or a challenge? yes, but i should warn you, i will do absolutely anything, so be careful what you ask me to do. this is the bbc‘s - what you ask me to do. this is the bbc‘s — we are quite tame. what you ask me to do. this is the bbc's - we are quite tame. would you prefer the red reindeer knows? what
5:58 pm
is your party trick? i don't know if i got one. i think, generally when i'm drunk, my party trick is being obnoxious and shouting socialist rants at people who usually believe the same thing as me, but as if they don't. most of the time, i'm very left wing, and they're like, i know, i know, ithink left wing, and they're like, i know, i know, i think the same. left wing, and they're like, i know, i know, i think the samelj left wing, and they're like, i know, i know, i think the same. i have a question. there you go, paloma there on the catwalk. that is the special programme, continuing on the red button. sports personality of the year begins on bbc one, live at 7pm, and we will finally know at that point who has been nominated. now, the weather. storm deirdre caused some problems
